What’s Your Universal Assignment?

“Really believe in your heart of hearts that your fundamental purpose, the reason for being, is to enlarge the lives of others. Your life will be enlarged also. And all of the other things we have been taught to concentrate on will take care of themselves.”

Reading “Release Your Brilliance,” by Simon T. Bailey, took me back in time to a moment I asked The Big Question.

I recently picked up the book “Release Your Brilliance,” by author Simon T. Bailey. Its subtitle grabbed my attention: The 4 Steps to Transforming Your Life and Revealing Your Genius to the World.

As a person who works with people in their own processes of transformation, I knew I had to give the book a read.

The premise of the book is that we are all born brilliant and we are here to release that brilliance into the world. That brilliance is our own special talents, which Bailey refers to as genius.

In one chapter, he urges us to discover our “universal assignment.” Bailey says that everything on Earth has a divine assignment—and that includes you. And the discovery process begins with this question: “Why am I here?”

Reading this took me back to the moment I asked that question. I was turning that transformative age of 30. I remember lying in bed, hands behind my head on my pillow, staring at the ceiling. I was asking that question, “Why am I here?”

I knew there was a reason. I had attempted suicide twice in my 20s, each time interrupted by Divine Intervention. But I hadn’t discovered the Answer. And so, I was still asking the Question.

The Answer did come in the form of an advertisement in the Parade magazine that comes in the Sunday paper (or at least it did back then). The ad was for a report that revealed your life purpose through the science of numbers. And for some reason, I felt a compulsion to order the report. And getting it was a moment that woke me up.

And, while Bailey gives an exercise to discover your universal assignment, I decided to do my own: I went and consulted the Tarot, asking the question: “What do I need to know about my Universal Assignment?”

The Answer to the Question of My Universal Assignment

Karma, from the Sirian Starseed Tarot (also known as Judgement). It was the response to my question about my Universal Assignment.

The card I pulled, from the Sirian Starseed Tarot, is Karma.

Karma is a Major Arcana card, and as such, carries more weight in a reading. One of the meanings of this card is purpose. When Karma appears, it signals that one is exploring his or her purpose, calling, and life mission. It is an urging to heed the call and take action.

The lotus at the top of the card is a symbolic representation of rebirth and unfoldment, associated with many Eastern spiritual traditions. The lotus is known to be associated with purity, spiritual awakening and faithfulness. The lotus, being pink, is said to be the supreme lotus and is considered to be the true lotus of Buddha. The opening of the lotus is symbolic of one’s “opening up” to Divine Truth.

When one opens up to the Truth of Who They Are, the person sees and experiences life in a new light and way, and moves through the world differently, as a result.

There are water droplets that descend from the lotus, touching the still waters below. As the drops make contact, a ripple effect is created. And here is what that tells me: That my Universal Assignment is to help others in their process of unfoldment. As I unfold, I touch other who then unfold, and each of those people then touch people, and on and on it goes.

My Universal Assignment is to help uplift consciousness. As I become more aware, I help others to become aware.

The Higher Self card (also known as the High Priestess), from the Sirian Starseed Tarot.

The card is numbered 20, which represents the sharing (2) of Divine ideas and ideals (0). The 20 then reduces to 2, which is represented by the Higher Self card. This is the card of the Intuitive, and the sharing of the ancient esoteric and metaphysical wisdom tools—like dreams, Tarot, and the science of the numbers I mentioned earlier—which was my first step into the world of the metaphysical. And all are a part of the work I do in service to the world now.

It’s moments like this when I truly love Tarot and that work I get so much pleasure in doing.

I began this post talking about the work of Bailey, and I’ll wrap it up the same way. He invites the reader to discover his or her Universal Assignment.

But, perhaps, you’re like me, and you have already discovered your Assignment and are living it. If so, revisit it (the Karma card is also about conducting a “life review”). As you unfold and evolve, so too will your Assignment.

Bailey then urges you and I to help others find their Universal Assignments. His words: “Walk along beside them as a coach and friend and invite them to look at themselves in the mirror of life. Guide others to the place where they will ask:

  • Who do I want to be?
  • How do I want to leave my mark?

Your Universal Assignment is not to touch everyone—it is to touch someone.”

It would seem, in my particular case, that the Tarot shares Bailey’s urging. I have heard—and I am heeding—the call.

How will you?

Your partner in discovering your Universal Assignment—and then doing it,

James
