Today’s Tarot: Moving Away From Memory Lane

The 6 of Cups, from the Original Rider Waite Tarot.

When our Tarot card for today, the 6 of Cups, is given to you, its message is to look back on the past fondly. This is a card of memories and nostalgia. You may be feeling (Cups being the suit of feelings and emotions) like taking a stroll down “Memory Lane.” Are things still the way you remembered? If not, what’s changed?

And while it’s fun (and sometimes it’s not) to revisit the past, the 6 of Cups also encourages us to look to the future. Sometimes, though, we have to be willing to let elements of our past go in order to move forward.

The 6 of Cups, from this perspective, can be a card of tribute. What ceremony or ritual can you create that both honors—and frees you from—the past so you can move forward now?

The 6 (being connected to the Lovers from the Major Arcana) is the number of choices, and the floral bouquets, for me, are a visual pun for “making arrangements.”

So, for today, consider these things:

  1. The events of the past have brought you to where you are now
  2. Knowing that, can you look back at the past differently? How can you pay tribute to the past in a way that heals (a nod to the Lovers again) and empowers you?
  3. You get to decide where you want to go from here. What “arrangements” do you feel you need to make so you can get there?

Your partner in moving from the past–and toward the future,

James
