Introducing The Mitchell Divination Oracle
About The Mitchell Divination Oracle
This deck is the answer to a question I was asked during a mastermind I am part of. Katherine Hiraldo, the person who created and facilitates the mastermind, asked me, as we were discussing divination as it relates to ethnicity, “Have you given any thought to creating your own personal divination system?” In that moment, I instantly felt that a deck of cards (my favorite form of divination) was in the making.
The deck combines spiritual archetypes personal to my practice with cards influenced by European fortune telling systems I have studied and read with throughout my cartomancy journey and experience. I have heard it said that decks of cards are like unbound books; with that idea in mind, I consider The Mitchell Divination Oracle my unbound memoir.
The Cards
The Mitchell Divination Oracle is a 65-card deck, consisting of 61 cards, with the remaining four cards being variants which allow for readings that focus on same-sex relationships.
The cards are standard poker size and printed on linen stock. The card size and stock pays tribute to how I became a cartomancer: I had a dream in which I was reading and studying with a deck of standard playing cards. For me, personally, after many years of reading cards (and the last several years creating my own decks) I find that I prefer cards and decks this size.
The art on the cards is in a more illustrative style than my other decks; the hand-drawn quality is a loving throwback to the days when I was a comic book cartoonist (I spent some time in the underground comics movement in my late teens and throughout my 20s) – and I have to say that I love the overall look of the deck.
The cards also have colored borders that correspond to the five elements: red for fire (intention and action); yellow for air (the intellect, communication, and information); blue for water (feelings, emotions, and relationships); green for earth (the physical and the material, resources and assets); and purple for spirit (transcendence).

roulette wheel

When the Roulette Wheel turns up, one of its possible messages is that life is opening up for you.
This card can represent the cycles of life, with its ups and downs and ebbs and flows. The Roulette Wheel lets you know that “what goes around comes around.” It can also indicate a time of things changing for the better. Things are turning around, as the Roulette Wheel indicates a major turning point in your life.
The Roulette Wheel can also represent opportunities showing up, a time where you seem to be in the right place at the right time (synchronicities). When this card appears, it can suggest Destiny is stepping in and Fortune is smiling upon you.
The Roulette Wheel also suggest that when certain opportunities are presented, it might be in your best interest to consider whether you want to “take a chance” on those opportunities, as well as the possible “risks” they might have (“playing the odds”).
Being a card of evolution and expansion, the Roulette Wheel can also suggest that you’re ready to look at the cycles and patterns that show up in your life again and again. If those cycles and patterns aren’t working for you, then this is your opportunity to break those cycles and interrupt those patterns. Will you take the opportunity this time – or go for another “spin” and wait until those situations show up the next time?
If you realize there are cycles and patterns in your life that aren’t working for you (anymore), the Roulette Wheel is an invitation to consider a new perspective. This is the time to step back and see if there’s a lesson from a “big picture” point of view. There’s wisdom within these repetitive experiences that you wouldn’t acquire any other way. The Roulette Wheel says it’s time to integrate those lessons learned.
Consider giving this affirmation a spin: “Life is continually bringing me the opportunities for my growth, expansion, and evolution, and I am ready.”
angels

When the Angels card turns up, it offers a few possibilities for your consideration:
First, the depiction of the angels in the image as three vertical beams of light comes from a personal experience with them: In a dream, I was in the air surrounded by three angels, each one a different colored beam of light. They “told” me (I could hear their voices in my mind) they would always be with me and to call on them when needed.
With this in mind, the first possibility being offered is to pay attention to your dreams for messages (angels being messengers) of inspiration and guidance. It may be that your angels are choosing dreams to “speak” with you because that is the way you would best be open and receptive to their messages (your conscious defenses are lowered due to being in an unconscious state). I’m being “told” that the angels in this state are akin to “seeing the light” or receiving “enlightenment.”
Another possibility is that you’re being encouraged to develop more of a connection to and with angels at this time – either with your guardian (personal) angels or the wider “spectrum” of angels. You might find the messages coming to you in “stream of consciousness” form or “energy downloads.” In some metaphysical circles, angels can represent divine ideas or inspired thought – so sudden ideas, a-has, or epiphanies just may be your angels at work. Whatever the case, this would be a time to either learn or become more aware of your mode of receptivity (seeing, hearing, feeling, or knowing).
Another thing I see in the Angels card – and this is interesting, because it’s something I have no experience with whatsoever: There may be a growing interest in light work – and I’m getting the sense of “light codes” in particular. The angels are also impressing the term “light language” on me right now, as I type this.
And finally, with Angels being messengers, this card can also represent the mass media, radio, and television. With that, keep in mind (be more aware of) the messages being “broadcasted” all around you. Some are more overt (obvious and apparent) and some are more subtle. All these messages are designed to have you think – and believe – a certain way (conditioning and programming).
It might even be that you become more aware of your internal conditioning and programming – through what you think and say about yourself to yourself – and to rethink those thoughts and reframe those words. Your thoughts and words are powerful things.
using the cards
There are many ways to work with the cards. One of the ways I use the deck is for what I call a “daily draw.” I ask a simple question, like “What is my guidance for today?” or “What do I need to focus on today?” I then draw a single card as the answer, and reflect on the possibilities being offered as guidance.
I also work with the cards to answer more specific questions, using “What do I need to know about (the particular situation or experience)?” as the prompt. This is just one example of the numerous types of questions you can put to the cards. I then draw three cards: the first representing the situation; the second offering guidance or advice; and the third suggesting a potential or possible outcome. As with the single card draw mentioned above, I take time to reflect on each of the cards for the insights they can provide.
And the third way I like to use my deck is to read a line of five cards. As with the three-card draw, I ask a clear and specific question; for example, “What do I need to know about my study and work as a card reader?” I draw five cards: the first represents the situation; the second, my expectations; the third, any possible hidden influences; the fourth, guidance or advice being offered for consideration; and the fifth card, a potential or possible outcome.
I believe The Mitchell Divination Oracle can be used by people with all levels of reading experience. Whether you’re just staring out reading cards, or you consider yourself to be an expert, The Mitchell Divination Oracle can be a tool for personal and spiritual growth and development.
