Dream Decoding: The Boxer

Hello and welcome to the latest entry of the oh-so popular Dream Decoding series, the column where I get the pleasure of examining and decoding your dreams!

In this installment, I’m decoding a dream submitted by Jimmy, a young man who had a work-related dream, in which he gets to wait on a celebrity customer. Read on…

Dream Title: The Boxer

A dreamer shares a dream that featured a famous boxer.

I am at work, making a sub for a customer. The customer tells me, as I reach to put jalapeno peppers on the sub, that he doesn’t want them. I look at the customer and I realize he is Oscar de la Hoya, the boxer.

The Boxer: the Interpretation

The subject matter of Jimmy’s dream is his workplace, as that is the location in the dream. In waking life, Jimmy works in a deli.

He is waiting on a customer in the dream. In connection to his work, this part of the dream is telling Jimmy that he needs to develop patience (pun for waiting) on the job. The dream may be suggesting that Jimmy is impatient when dealing with customers at work.

Another aspect of waiting on customers for Jimmy is that he is providing a service. Being in service to others places a high spiritual aspect to this dream. Having said that, Jimmy may be struggling with the fact that he may think or feel that, in a larger spiritual sense, this job doesn’t really have any sense of purpose or meaning.

His role as a service person says that his “work” is really that of a hands-on spiritual healer (working with his hands, and food being a source of fuel–energy, restoration, and healing–for the body). But, in order to be of any real service to anyone else, he must “work” on healing certain things within himself.

Boxing in a dream can represent things we are "fighting" in waking life. To dream of a professional boxer can suggest the "fight" is connected to waking life work or career issues.

Something the dream is asking Jimmy to “work” on are the things that he is letting irritate him at work, which is symbolized by the reaching for the jalapeno peppers. Things at work can get him “hot” (meaning angry). What Jimmy may not understand is that he is making himself “hot”/angry (he is making the sub).

This is a conflict he is having within himself that he must address. This is indicated by Jimmy looking up and seeing (facing) the boxer Oscar de la Hoya. Since de la Hoya is a boxer by profession, again the dream is saying this is something Jimmy is being asked to “work” on.

Also significant is the name “Oscar.” It can be seen as a pun for the Oscar, or Academy Award. In this vein, this can be an acknowledgement of the reward that will come with such an achievement, as an Oscar is given out as a recognition for outstanding work. This is reinforced by Oscar telling Jimmy that he does not want the jalapenos on his sub.

I personally love work-related dreams, as they tell us so much about what we bring to our work environments, especially when, as in Jimmy’s dream, we get wrapped up in the external circumstances and other people in the workplace. The things that take place at work that we choose to be affected by, and choose to be reactive to, are really indications of the inner “work” we need to do; once we realize this, these circumstances become opportunities for our personal growth and development.

I want to thank Jimmy for submitting this great dream. If you are interested in having your dream featured and interpreted in a future installment of Dream Decoding, you can submit to me at james@jameshimm.com, putting “Dream Decoding” and the title of the dream in the subject line.

As always, I want to thank you for reading and following the blog regularly. I appreciate the investment of your time, and your support; it means so much.

Until next time…sweet dreams!

James
