The Insight at the Traffic Light

I had a powerful insight while waiting for a traffic light to turn green so I could make a left turn.

I don’t know about you, but I love driving. Some of the most wonderful insights come to me while on the road. Such was the case today.

I was on the way back to my office from a meeting with my co-host, Sarah. We host a weekly internet radio show, “Sacred Expressions,” and I wanted to pass on to her a book a future guest wanted her to have.

As I’m driving back, wonderful business ideas start coming to me about what I want people to walk away with after having worked with me.

As a part of that thinking process, I thought if my life were a song, what would it be?

And it became so clear. Just like a song with a catchy lyrical hook, I saw myself saying the same thing again and again throughout many different circumstances in my life.

But that will have to be the topic of another post, because I’m digressing.

So, I get to the traffic light that will allow me to turn onto the street where my office is located. It’s one that has the traffic light indicate when you can make a left turn before letting the traffic on the other side start moving again. You know the one, right? (no pun intended)

So, I’m waiting for the turn light to come on—and it doesn’t.

The light turns green, allowing the traffic on both sides to move at once. And the flow on the opposing side was very steady, so the next thing I know the light is red again, and I’m still there.

So, I thought for sure the left-turn arrow light would come on this time.

And again, the light changed, allowing both sides to begin moving.

At this point, I inched the car out, and said these words: “I guess I’m just gonna have to put myself out there, to make this turn.”

And when the light turned red again, I made the left turn onto my street.

As I made the turn, this thought came to me: How often in life do we wait for a signal, for permission, to make a change in our lives—when sometimes we just need to put ourselves out there, to take it upon ourselves, and just do it?

As I pulled into the driveway of my office, I marveled at how the seemingly little things that happen in the course of our days can provide the biggest a-ha moments.

And I couldn’t wait to share it with you.

And how about you? What a-ha moment have you had in your life recently? I would love to hear all about it. You can share the details with me in the comments section below.
