Are You Walking Your Self-Talk?

Lately, I have been doing my personal inner work using affirmations. Affirmations, for those who may not be aware, are positive statements that declare who we want to become and what we wish to create in our lives. They are stated in the present tense, as already being the person we are intending to become, and already having what we desire.

I have discovered that working with affirmations is actually working with the Law of Attraction, which is the Universal Principle that our thoughts and beliefs create our experiences. As a result of this realization, I have been having a lot of resources come my way about the Law of Attraction and engaging in wonderful conversations with people and illuminating dialogues with my clients about the power of our thoughts.

Being a student and lover of the Tarot, I recently pulled off the shelf my copy of the “Law of Attraction Tarot” and have been pulling daily cards and posting them on my “Intuitive Insights” page on Facebook. The more I sit and work with the cards, the more interesting the information they convey.

Such was the case when I pulled today’s card, which is the 9 of Swords. When the 9 of Swords comes our way, we are being asked to examine the negative self-talk we are having in our heads.

The image on this card has one very tall man pointing down to another, shorter man. The shorter man hangs his head, as he stands in the shadow of the other man.

Since the Law of Attraction is based on the concept that our thoughts create our reality, these men represent aspects of our thinking. The taller man pointing down to the shorter man is the part of ourselves that likes to point things out in our lives that can cause us to choose to experience guilt and shame. The shorter man, conversely, is that part of ourselves that chooses to believe the negative self-talk.

When we choose to believe this negative self-talk as truth, it has the potential to create a psychological spillover into all areas of our lives (symbolized by the overshadowing effect in the card). What we focus on, we create more of that experience.

So, when we choose to focus on what we perceive to be “wrong” with us, the Law of Attraction will bring the people and conditions to us that will validate those thoughts and beliefs. These experiences can be in the form of people who believe themselves to be “better” or “superior” to us, and then we choose to believe them and then think we are “inferior.”

Or we may find ourselves comparing ourselves to others, and thinking and believing that we fall “short,” that we somehow just don’t measure up. Or we “attract” that person who readily points out our perceived “shortcomings,” which may be connected to unresolved issues from our pasts that we still choose to respond with guilt, shame, and embarrassment.

When the 9 of Swords comes into our lives, we are being encouraged to ask ourselves how that negative self-talk serves and supports us, because we are engaging with it for a reason; it meets an otherwise unmet need we have–or else we would not inflict the pain of those conversations on ourselves.

Once we are aware of the reasons for the negative self-talk, we can choose better feeling thoughts that will help us move out of the shadows–and into the light.

Your partner in seeing–and walking in–the light,

James
