Are Things Not Turning Out As You Expected?

Our card for today, Variance, paints an interesting picture. The woman has followed the recipe “by the book,” yet her cake didn’t come out looking “like it does in the picture.”

Where have you experienced a similar thing—in that you followed someone else’s recipe/tactics/plan of action “to the letter,” only to find yourself not having achieved the exact same results?

Variance is a metaphor for life. Nothing in life works for everyone all the time. Not everything in life turns out as expected.

In the image, there lies a perfect cupcake next to the open recipe book. The cupcake is a reminder for you to notice and appreciate the small successes in your life. You have had those moments of having the “icing on the cake”—with the proverbial “cherry on top.”

Remember these moments when you decide to take on something larger—and it falls short of your expectations. What works for someone else may not work for you—simply because you are not that other person, nor is that person you. We each have different beliefs, attitudes, circumstances that are uniquely our own. Life is not a “cookie cutter” experience. One size does not fit all.

When things don’t turn out the way you expected, it’s not a failure. It’s an opportunity for experimentation. Sometimes, someone else’s “recipe” needs that “missing little special extra something” that only you can give it—and in doing so, taking something that started out as a duplication—and making it an original.

So, for today, consider what you might need to tweak—and give it another try. Because “individual results may vary.”
